ANOMALyS

ANOMALyS are a genre-blending indie band with origins rooted in the vibrant campus life of Queen's University in Belfast. Formed in 2022, the band initially came together as a duo with vocalist/keyboardist Stephen Moreland and lead guitarist Louis Orr, two friends who bonded over a love for eclectic sounds and a vision of pushing the boundaries of modern indie rock. They quickly drew in two equally talented musicians, bassist Padraig Manning and drummer Luka Maxwell, to round out the band’s lineup, creating a diverse sonic palette that blends alt-pop, indie rock, blues, and funk.

Since their inception, ANOMALyS has been cultivating a distinct style characterized by infectious energy, genre-hopping versatility, and a passion for experimentation. Their music captures the dynamism of jangle pop’s breezy optimism while also diving into the gritty depths of blues rock—a blend that has quickly earned them a reputation for delivering powerful, genre-defying performances. After debuting with a self-titled EP in 2022, they’ve returned with their latest single, "Runaways", a track that explores the playful, high-energy side of their sound while embracing bold, alt-pop influences.

"Runaways" showcases ANOMALyS’s knack for blending danceable, funk-inspired grooves with gritty rock elements. Packed with R&B-tinged rhythms, chunky guitar riffs, and layers of vibrant synth textures, the track brings together the infectious energy of Two Door Cinema Club, the raw edginess of The Black Keys, and the psychedelic whimsy of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Their sense of fun and spontaneity shines through in this track, which, as the band admits, isn’t a deep exploration of life’s complexities but simply a feel-good, party-ready anthem.

Recorded at Belfast’s renowned Start Together Studios with producer Rocky O'Reilly and his extensive synth collection, the single "Runaways" is a testament to ANOMALyS’s creative approach—taking inspiration from across genres to craft a sound that’s both familiar and refreshingly original. Each track from the band feels like a surprise, thanks to their unpredictable mix of influences, but with "Runaways," they’re taking a confident step into a sound they’ve truly made their own.
