Helen O’Shea

Limerick-born and New-Jersey based, Helen O’Shea is an independent singer-songwriter and artist whose late-blooming music career springs from a rich former life in medicine and motherhood. Blending Celtic roots with Americana heart she calls her sound AmeriCeltiCana, and uses song as a means of connection, story and healing. Her upcoming album Songs In The Key of O (March 2026) pays heartfelt tribute to Irish icons Sinéad O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan while forging forward into her own voice.

Background & Journey

Helen’s path is anything but conventional. Before the stage lights she held a distinguished medical career: starting with medical school in Ireland (University College Galway) and moving into obstetrics/gynecology and research in Canada at McGill University. American Songwriter
A move to the US in 2011 marked a turning point: stepping away from medicine to redirect toward her lifelong passion for music. COBRA PROMOTIONS
Her early musical awakening was shaped by hearing Sinéad O’Connor’s audacious voice and visual on the Irish national TV (Late Late Show) and by listening to her fellow Limerick native Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries. COBRA PROMOTIONS
In the studio she found an ally in two-time Grammy winner Marc Swersky, who helped bring her original songs to life. She Is The Music

Signature Sound & Projects

Helen describes her musical style as AmeriCeltiCana — a fusion of Americana storytelling with Celtic soul and sensibility. Her songs explore themes of reinvention, healing, motherhood, the search for voice and freedom from constraints. American Songwriter
Her upcoming album Songs In The Key of O is a deeply personal tribute project, honouring the work and influence of Sinéad O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan. The first singles released include “Rock and Roll Angel” (featuring Barry Murphy) and the upcoming “Caged Birds” (featuring Liam Ó Maonlaí). I Love Limerick
Other past works include a debut full-length Turning Tides, produced with Marc Swersky. American Songwriter

Why She Matters Now

In an era where many artists follow trends, Helen’s story highlights the opposite: waiting, recalibrating, stepping in later but doing so with clarity and purpose. Her Irish roots and US base give her cross-cultural depth. For the Irish independent music scene she offers both heritage and fresh voice — a bridge between generations.
Her personal narrative (medicine → motherhood → music) resonates especially with women rediscovering their identity, making her profile distinct in the market. The tribute album further connects her to wider conversations in Irish music about legacy, influence and belonging.
